Supporting critical humanitarian efforts

Since 2015, the St. John Committee has raised vital funds for the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and Malta’s humanitarian efforts around the world and right here in New York City. Led and run entirely by volunteers, our events directly support the most vulnerable among us.

The Order of Malta is one of the oldest institutions of Western and Christian civilization. A lay religious order of the Catholic Church since 1113 and a subject of international law, the Sovereign Order of Malta has diplomatic relations with over 100 states and the European Union, and permanent observer status at the United Nations. It is neutral, impartial and apolitical. Today, the Order of Malta is active in 120 countries caring for people in need through its medical, social and humanitarian works. Across the world, the Order of Malta is dedicated to the preservation of human dignity and the care of all those in need, regardless of their origin or religion. 

The Committee operates under the aegis of the Order of Malta American Association, which is registered in the United States as a tax-exempt §501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation. Donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowable by law.

The White Cross Ball of New York City

Since 2015, the White Cross Ball of New York City has raised critical funds for the Order of Malta’s global humanitarian efforts. Join us on Friday, November 7 for an unforgettable night in support of the most vulnerable among us. The black tie evening will welcome guests for cocktails and a seated dinner prior to dancing.

  • Malteser International Americas

    The international humanitarian aid organization of the Order of Malta, Malteser International Americas cares for the most vulnerable among us by providing aid to people affected by poverty, disease, conflict and disaster throughout North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean. The Committee has also supported Malteser International, which provides aid to people in need in over 140 projects in more than 30 countries.

  • The Holy Family Hospital of Bethlehem

    The Holy Family Hospital of Bethlehem Foundation is a state-of-the-art maternity and neonatal critical care center serving women, infants, and children throughout the Holy Land.

  • Malta Camp USA

    Malta Camp USA is built on the belief that every person is wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14) and deserving of a community that fully loves and accepts them exactly as they are! Anchored in the week we spend together at camp each summer, Malta Camp USA provides a robust life-long community supporting our Guests with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

  • Flu Vaccination Clinics

    The NYC Area’s annual Flu Vaccination Clinics, conducted in partnership with Malteser International Americas at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church and St. Francis Breadline, provide flu shots free of charge to homeless and underserved individuals. The NYC Area also provides guests with gift bags, which included winter hats, socks, gloves, and a Dunkin’ Donuts gift card.

  • Circus at Mother Cabrini Hospital

    ArchCare at Mother Cabrini Hospital is located at Terence Cardinal Cooke HealthCare Center in East Harlem and is home to children and young adults with serious developmental disabilities and other extraordinary medical needs. The NYC Area’s annual Circus brings fun, excitement, and balloons galore to the residents of Mother Cabrini.

  • Malta Walks

    On the third Wednesday of every month, the NYC Area makes sandwiches and assembles bags of clothing and essential supplies to distribute to homeless individuals living on the streets during evening hours.

  • Mobile Ministry

    The NYC Area’s 15-passenger van supports our hands-on volunteer work across the city. In partnership with Thrive for Life, a Jesuit-run prison ministry nonprofit that helps formerly incarcerated individuals reintegrate into society, the van will further help bring the formerly incarcerated to spiritual retreats, stock food pantries for families of those affected by justice, and transport construction materials for housing.

Get involved

Every day, 95,000 dedicated volunteers of all ages, nationalities, and faiths are supporting the Order of Malta’s projects across the world. Year-on-year, they care for the homeless living in isolation in cities, assist refugees, provide first-aid and organize medical and social campaigns, respond to victims of natural disasters, accompany disabled guests on pilgrimages and summer camps, support the elderly housebound, and prepare nourishing food for people living in poverty in bitter winters.
